If you've been coming to our clinic over the years, chances are you've heard us talking about Merlak!
It's been part of our family clinics for over 25 years, first with Mum in Breath of Life and then with me in AOK Nutrition. Over the years, we've seen some amazing results with clients struggling with gut issues, and it's always been one of our favourite products in clinic.
So when we heard the original manufacturer was retiring and Merlak might disappear, we just couldn't let that happen! So, Mum and I decided to take it on ourselves, and that's how Merlak Gold was born.
But we wanted to do more than give it a new bottle and a fancy label; We've been working with scientists at Carlow IT to better understand the formulation and explore the science behind why Merlak has been so helpful for our clients over the years.
So why aren't we calling Merlak a probiotic anymore?
If you've used Merlak before, you might remember us referring to it as a probiotic.
Through our research, we've learned that the more accurate way to describe it is as a liquid food supplement containing L-lactic acid.
And this is where things get interesting!
Lactic acid is naturally produced by some of the good bacteria in our gut. Certain gut bacteria can use it to produce beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids which helps nourish our gut lining and maintain a healthy gut barrier.
After seeing such positive experiences with Merlak in clinic for so many years, it's exciting to finally start understanding the science that might help explain why!
The important thing? It's still the same Merlak you've known for years - just with new packaging and a better understanding of what's inside!

INGREDIENTS
Deionised Water, L-Lactic Acid, Lactose Monohydrate (MILK), Sorbic Acid
That’s it! We don’t add any flavourings, colourings or sweeteners, so those four ingredients really are everything in the bottle.
DOSAGE
Take 1 mL daily (x1 full pipette), diluted in a glass of water
DOES IT NEED TO GO IN THE FRIDGE?
No, a cool, dry press away from direct sunlight is perfectly fine.
HOW LONG DOES A BOTTLE LAST?
At one pipette a day, a 50 mL bottle lasts about seven weeks.
