Homemade Healthy Tomato Sauce


Supermarket tomato sauces are one of the WORST culprits for having hidden sugar in them- most of them having 7+ teaspoons of sugar in them! It's tricky because tomato based dishes are also one of the handiest things to whip up. The best thing to do is to make your own- I think I have finally perfected this and this is the recipe I use for all of my tomato based dishes you see.


Recipe

  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes

  • 2 tbsp tomato puree

  • 1 red onion

  • 2 cloves garlic

  • Dash of Salt + Pepper

Method

  • Chop and fry the garlic and onion on the pan for 2 minutes (I use coconut oil for this but you can use any oil)

  • Add the tomato paste and chopped tomatoes.

  • NB- Let simmer for atleast 30 minutes. This is the most important tip. You will see the sauce thicken up and this is where the magic happens and the tomatoes burst with flavour!

  • I usually throw in whatever I am cooking while the sauce is simmering (veg, mince, meat balls etc)
